Mass Vet Saved Queen B!

February 14, 2023

Bianca, also known as Queen B, is a Long-Haired Scottish Straight who is about to be 3 years old. But, she almost didn’t make it to her first birthday.

In 2020, Bianca found her forever home with her new owners. They were so excited to have their first fur-baby and spoil the heck out of her! But after a few days of being home, they started to notice rapid changes in Bianca. Being new cat parents, they weren’t too familiar with “normal” cat behaviors but they knew something wasn’t right. Then it quickly worsened. This was when the Mass Vet team stepped into action and saved Bianca’s life.

Arriving at Mass Vet

Bianca’s owners brought her to the ER at Mass Vet where she was seen right away. Upon presentation she had a high fever, lethargy, decrease in appetite, diarrhea, and conjunctivitis in her left eye. Due to her age and recent travel to her new home, the safest option for Bianca was to be hospitalized with the team where she could be closely monitored.

Then: Bianca’s Diagnosis & Treatment

After blood work and further testing was done, Bianca was diagnosed with the highly contagious viral disease called Feline Panleukopenia (FPL). The virus attacks the bone marrow and GI tract, typically causing significant vomiting and diarrhea as well as decreased white blood cells. Due to the nature of this severe disease, especially dangerous in kittens, her owners were told there could be a chance that she might not make it. But Mass Vet was going to do anything they could for Bianca.

In their care, she received supportive treatment like fluid therapy, antibiotics, nutrition, antinausea medication, and more. They also started her on antibiotic eye drops for her conjunctivitis and swollen eye. She stayed overnight with the Mass Vet team for about four days, receiving around-the-clock care and treatment. The wonderful technicians were great with communication, keeping her owners updated daily on how Bianca was doing. The techs even coordinated multiple FaceTime calls with them which helped calm their nerves being away from her.

After four long days, Bianca’s fever had resolved, and she started to eat! She began to feel and look much better than when she arrived. Bianca was cleared to be discharged from Mass Vet and be monitored at home with her owners.

Come to find out, her entire litter was infected by FPL and all the other kittens in her litter had unfortunately passed away. But due to the swift decisions of her owners, Bianca was able to receive the immediate veterinary care needed in order to aid her back to health. Her owners said, “We were absolutely terrified after we heard about that. But our little girl was saved, thanks to the amazing team and veterinary medicine at Mass Vet.”

Now: Healthy & Happy

Fast forward almost 3 years, Bianca is doing amazing and is healthy as ever! She is about to celebrate her third birthday and now has a brother! We can confirm she is the most spoiled girl, but it’s well-deserved. Her owners can’t thank Mass Vet enough for being there for them and Bianca during such a scary time. Check out some photos of Bianca now and how well she is doing!

Now: Bianca still has a comfort piggy friend.
